Penelope Cruz Rumored To Play The Next Bond Girl

If rumors are to believed, it seems that the producers of the long-running James Bond franchise loved Javier Bardem’s performance as the villainous Silva in Sam Mendes’ Skyfall so much that they’re even game to cast people related to him in the upcoming sequel. Like, for example, Bardem’s wife.

Yahoo UK has apparently heard from “a source close to the production” that Penelope Cruz is in talks to play the female lead (a.k.a. the next Bond girl) opposite Daniel Craig in the untitled Bond 24, which is currently being planned for release some time in 2016. The site notes that if Cruz has the part she would become the oldest Bond girl in the franchise’s history. In 2015 the Spanish actress will be 41 years old, which is two years older than Honor Blackman was when she portrayed Pussy Galore in 1962¬ís Goldfinger. Said the source about the casting,”The producers have tried to get Penelope before, but she has never been available because of other commitments. The discussions have been going on for some time and they are working out the contract details now.”

While it is is definitely possible that the Bond producers were desperate to lock Cruz down, I’m not sure how much stock to put in this rumor. Back in 2010 there were stories that said Skyfall would star Rachel Weisz, Craig’s wife, was the film’s villain, and that turned out to be untrue (isn’t it funny that both that old rumor and this new one involve husband-wife pairings?). Recent reports suggest we don’t even know if Mendes has been locked down as a director, and something tells me that he would want to have an opinion about the actress that will play the female lead. Recognize that this rumor exists, but don’t necessarily believe it.
